The report analyses 15 different trends, ranging from population growth, urbanization, through agricultural productivity and innovation up to governance for food and nutrition security and development finance and 10 major challenges for food security, poverty eradication, agriculture and food systems.
The economic growth and population dynamics influence a structural change of economies that often does not reach the rural areas and the agricultural industry. One explanation offered by the report if that many of the trends are interlinked and cancel out effects from positive transformations to even sharpen the challenges. But in the same way, efforts to address the challenges help turn or limit the effects of some of the trends. The report concludes that the challenges underline the interdependence of countries in achieving the SDGs and their implementation hinges on major transformation of agricultural practices, economies and governance that address the multiple challenges.
