Youth unemployment rates in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia are among the highest in the world, especially for young women. The coming decades will continue to bring a massive influx of new young entrants into the labour markets, demanding good quality jobs. The combination of a youthful population and the rising demand for agro-food products in these countries, supported by policies in the areas of skills development could be the recipe for creating new jobs in the agro-food sector. Domestic generation of value-added along the agro-food value chain is low in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. At all stages of the chain – from agriculture production, post-harvesting, food manufacturing and processing to consumption – the potential for creating good jobs, profiting local firms, and responding to food demand are yet to be seized.
The OECD report Agro-food Jobs for Youth in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia analyses the employment opportunities along the agro-food value chain and provides policy recommendations to turn the vision of a productive agro-food sector into reality. This webinar, organized by the Thematic Working Group on Rural Youth Employment (TWG RYE), will bring together TWG RYE members, experts, development practitioners, and youth to foster knowledge exchange on on what is needed to promote decent job creation in the agro-food sector in the North African region.
