// Towards Zero Hunger
Ending hunger and malnutrition is a complex and multi-faceted goal, which can only be successfully tackled through partnerships. Actions must take place on multiple levels and be context sensitive. This was the continuous message of the “Towards Zero Hunger – Partnerships for Impact” SDG conference in Wageningen, which took place 30–31 August 2018.
The conference was especially important for the 50 by 2030 initiative which several members of the Platform are involved in. The initiative is the largest-ever financial commitment on data for agricultural development aiming to align country visions and donor commitments to deliver SDG 2 and grow enough food to feed the world. The 50 by 2030 initiative has been launched officially during a high-level side event at the UN General Assembly this week. More information about the initiative will be made available in due course.

// Lead, Measure, Grow
Leaders from government, private sector, research and development came together from 4–8 September 2018 at the 8th African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) in Kigali, Rwanda to discuss sustainable agricultural and economic growth across the African continent. Under the theme “Lead, Measure, Grow,” the discussions highlighted the importance of political guidance in championing policies that are conducive for food systems to flourish, as well as the importance of promoting accountability mechanisms, which help to measure progress and growth in the agricultural sector.
Throughout the AGRF, the theme of rural youth employment in agriculture and the food system was raised. This thematic focus was very relevant to the Platform and its members who have been promoting discussions on youth following this year’s Annual General Assembly on the topic of rural youth empowerment. At the AGRF, young agripreneurs urged development partners and financing institutions to believe and invest in them, which would better enable them to start businesses in the agricultural sector and become employers themselves. A number of Platform members also used the opportunity of the AGRF to meet on the sidelines together with youth representatives, to discuss the ongoing plans for a potential Platform work stream on youth. More information will be shared in due course.

Platform Event_ Realising the VGGTs and SDGs, Rome, Italy 18 October 2018
While global frameworks such as the VGGTs and SDGs have established clear objectives towards improved land governance, questions of how to monitor progress towards these goals and evaluate the impact of related interventions remain unanswered.
This event by the Global Donor Working Group on Land will take place on Thursday, 18 Oct 18:30–19:30 in Rome, Italy at the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The panel will reflect on the significance of the VGGTs and SDGs and how they are positioned to provide important insights into challenges on progress towards improved land governance. The debate will offer a critical reflection on the role of the growing ecosystem of data and how to further improve collaboration among actors, make people-centred data and monitoring tools more accessible, and further democratise the ecosystems of data surrounding the VGGTs and SDGs.
