Argentina has chosen to focus on sustainable food future and pay special attention to improving soil productivity. Agricultural development is recognized an essential driver for human and economic progress in the past. The anticipated population growth together with the unpredictable impacts of climate change put a strain on the sector and underscore its importance even more. In order to be able to ensure food security and further development in agriculture-centric countries, the issues note calls for more sustainable practices, innovation and international action.

The conservation of soils is a key part of sustainable development in all its aspects – economic, social and environmental. It is a limited and non-renewable resource. Every year around 10 million hectares of arable land are lost due to soil erosion. The rate of soil renewal is 10 to 40 slower than the degradation rate. This development is difficult to revert, but can be managed with efficient and effective sustainable practices and investments. Otherwise, the reduction will have irreversible impacts on the ecosystems and contribute to high food insecurity.
G20 countries are key players in the world food system. They represent a great percentage of the world’s arable land and are the leaders in world food trade. This puts them in a position to promote debate and cooperation activities to promote importance of sustainable soil management. In this context, there will be two agriculture delegates meetings (12-13 March 2018 and 26-27 July) and a Ministerial meeting (28 July).
