The Global Donor Platform for Rural Development (GDPRD) releases its 2024 Annual General Assembly (AGA) report, titled Financing Food Systems Transformation and Rural Revitalization: Opportunities and Challenges.

Held at IFAD headquarters in Rome on 26–27 November 2024, the AGA brought together leading donors, development actors, and experts to discuss how limited official development assistance (ODA) can be used more effectively and catalytically in food systems and rural development.

The emerging messages from the AGA are especially significant in light of the rapidly evolving donor environment. They underscore the urgent need to rethink the financing agenda for 2025 and beyond:

  • Finance as an Opportunity – Agriculture and food systems are investment opportunities, not just funding gaps.
  • Stronger Public-Private Partnerships – Blended finance and better coordination can unlock rural investment.
  • Reaching Those Who Need It Most – Financing must be inclusive and accessible to farmers, youth, and Indigenous communities.

As donors and stakeholders prepare for upcoming global convenings such as the Nutrition for Growth Summit in Paris and the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, the AGA discussions offer valuable insights into how to make more effective, sustainable investments in food systems transformation.
